KATALOOG - Timo Toots, 05.12.2014 – 04.01.2015 Le Lieu Unique, Nantes, France

WARNING

The territory you are about the enter is called Z. It’s a condition you might have experienced, but never noticed how it effects you.

Z will make your imperfect physical body vanish. It provides you with a sense of vision, sense of movement, sense of navigation, sense of security. But you must remember all times that your body is a vital part of being you. Do not let Z take it!

The trust you are giving to the machinery is making you vulnerable. You are substituting your natural abilities to navigate, communicate and remember with the single ability to operate the machine. In Z, your trust will be questioned.

The world of Z offers a way of looking at things. Its unbreakable logic, its remarkable perfection, and its efficient performance are the qualities you have been seeking for a long time. Do not let it fool you, because you are not Z and must not become one! Your inefficient emotions, imperfections, and unstable performance are the only things that make you different from Z.

The law in Z is different from ours, as it’s building blocks are not the same. The rules Z has invented will be pushed to your shoulders. Z’s algorithms try to avoid your “mistakes” and stop you from doing “wrong”. Its perfect, crime-less world will try to stop you from thinking about the ethics. Ask yourself before you obey!

Z is a project dealing with the contrast and contradictions of the virtual and physical spaces in our daily life.

The exhibition consists of two separate areas: the entrance and the Zone. The visitor has a possibility to borrow a machine called Triffid whose functions resemble a smartphone – it’s a mobile device with a screen, two cameras and positioning abilities. The Triffid provides the ability to see and navigate in the Zone. The trust is built between the visitor and the Triffid during the first steps in the Zone, but soon it’s evident that the machine has hidden agendas pushing it’s virtual logic to the physical human being.
